ICE was born out of the gratitude we feel toward the coaches and hockey family that give so much to the kids and to the sport.
Phil Downie was an important part of our journey and one of the many reasons we feel the need to pay it forward to other kids through ICE.
Phil Downie was the kind of guy that came and picked up Jacob for morning practice when Danniel was a baby so I didn’t have to haul them both down there, and he was the kind of guy that took Jacob on his first plane ride to WCC Ball Hockey tournament in Edmonton while myself and the other kids stayed back to care for our sick cat.
Coaches like Phil give more than hockey skills. They give commitment, they teach integrity, they provide opportunities to learn hard work and sportsmanship. Lessons like these transcend into all areas of life and the impact he made cannot be understated.
Here at ICE - we thank Phil for everything he gave and we’ll commit to continue his legacy and growing youth and family resiliency through sports.
At ICE, we believe in the power of sport to build resilience, community, and lifelong values. The Coach Phil Downie Memorial Award honors a coach who exemplifies Phil’s dedication, integrity, and commitment to young athletes.
Phil Downie was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a role model, and a friend. He showed up early, stayed late, and gave selflessly to ensure every player had the chance to grow, both on and off the ice. Whether it was driving a player to practice, offering encouragement after a tough game, or creating opportunities for kids to experience tournaments and team camaraderie, his impact reached far beyond the rink.
Each year, this award will recognize a coach who goes above and beyond for their players—someone who fosters sportsmanship, hard work, and inclusion in hockey. In Phil’s spirit of giving, the recipient will direct a financial award toward a youth hockey initiative of their choice, whether it’s helping cover registration costs, supporting development programs, or mentoring young coaches.
The Phil Downie Memorial Fund will grow through community donations, ensuring more kids can access the game they love in Phil’s honor.
Phil’s legacy is one of generosity, leadership, and love for the game. Through this award, we commit to continuing his impact—helping kids play, supporting families, and recognizing the coaches who, like Phil, make all the difference.
Nominate a coach who goes above and beyond for their players—someone who fosters sportsmanship, hard work, and inclusion in hockey.
The award will be chosen between May 1 of each year.
